A list of the tests required for all currently active API engine oil performance categories may be found in ASTM D 4485, the Standard Specification for Performance of Engine Oils. These tests were defined in accordance with the ASTM consensus process, with participation from oil, additive, automotive and general interest sectors. API's publication 1509, Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (EOLCS) describes the voluntary system and the roles of various independent organizations that are a part of the EOLCS.
