IOM Technical Databases for the industry.

Collection
IOM-Oil IOM collectors purchase hundreds of engine oil samples each year from retail markets throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Collections are planned on the basis of market share, population, and geographical location. Throughout the year, samples are continuously obtained from metropolitan areas, small towns, and rural locations to provide you with a representation of the marketplace.

Major and minor brand names are included in the collection. Both passenger car and heavy duty engine oils are collected in a mixture of SAE viscosity grades and service classifications.

Testing
Once purchased, samples of the oils are blind-coded without reference to brand name or manufacturer and sent to a few carefully selected and monitored laboratories where a battery of over 20 tests are run on each oil. All samples are tested in an identical manner to enable direct comparison between samples.

Quality is assured through our focus on consistent, unbiased, and accurate analyses. To verify test accuracy, coded reference oils are intermixed with each set of samples. An electronic error-detection program performs statistical analysis and automatically pulls out suspicious data for retesting. All data is reviewed by our Technical Advisory Board prior to publication.

Reporting
IOM-Report Test results and demographic information are published in the form of copyrighted reports. 'Primary Reports' containing test data, brand names, purchase location, even a photograph of each oil, are sent to Subscribers monthly. These provide an in-depth analysis of each oil. At the end of the year, a 'Cumulative Report' is sent to Subscribers, graphically portraying test results over the past one-year and five-year time frames. This allows Subscribers to analyze the overall trends and characteristics of the engine oil market.

As an important complement to the reports, DataNet computer diskettes containing all the information in the Primary Reports are available to Full Subscribers. This powerful tool gives Subscribers flexibility to use the data in a multitude of ways -- sorting to 'pull out' specific information, graphing for presentations, tabulating for comparison, etc.. It is currently available in several software formats.
