Abstract: Measurement of the low-temperature viscometric characteristics of automatic transmission fluids and gear oils has been conducted in an air bath environment for several decades despite certain limitations of precision in such an environment. The present paper discusses the background of the method, its past limitations and the means by which they were overcome.
